A few words on BioShock Infinite

This evening I finished Irrational Games’ BioShock Infinite and in lieu of writing a full review - which I am wholly unqualified to do - I just wanted to very briefly share a couple thoughts about this very profound game.

First off, if you consider yourself a gamer - especially if you identify as being a ‘serious’ one - you owe it to yourself to play this game, but I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that.

BioShock Infinite is a rare gem in gaming; a perfect blend of solid and interesting gameplay mechanics and scenarios, storytelling, graphics, art direction, world-building, and thematic exposition. Taken together, Irrational Games has created something in BioShock Infinite which I really feel is medium-defining for video games - I have no quarrel putting it ‘up there’ in comparison with the likes of Half Life 2 or the original BioShock in terms of games that ‘legitimize’ the video game as being a serious medium in which a story can be told and ideas can be shared.

In a medium of entertainment as young as video games is it is encouraging to have a game like BioShock Infinite exist. Like a great work of literature or film, BioShock Infinite makes you think. It engages you on an intellectual and emotional level well beyond what you are experiencing in the act of playing the game. The themes and ideas of BioShock Infinite are not content with being confined strictly to the universe of the game; they are worth discussing and contemplating in and the game encourages the gamer to do so.

If a category of video games’ ‘Great Works’ were ever to exist I would wholeheartedly consider BioShock Infinite to be recognized as such. It is an astounding achievement and acts to legitimize video games as a medium capable of producing content worthy of discussion and contemplation beyond the context of being sheer entertainment.

On Friday evening My Chemical Romance announced that the band would be breaking up.

While I’ve never been a huge My Chemical Romance fan, I recognize the influence the band had in shaping the emo pop-punk music scene that came to define a whole generation of young music listeners (particularly my generation; I was 14 when MCR’s debut Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge released, and 16 when their mega-popular Welcome to the Black Parade hit store shelves). If nothing else, MCR’s disbanding is yet another instance of something that was very prominent during my youth disappearing…the culture and music scene I used to so identify with slowly eroding away (growing up sucks).

The above track, “Helena” off of Three Cheers, remains one of my favourite MCR songs. For those who have never heard it, enjoy, and for those who know every word, join me in taking a trip down memory lane.
